How we apply technology, planning, and financing across sectors

What powers each sector

Lime Industry

The use of alternative fuels and green electricity is key to climate-neutral lime production.

Lime is an essential material for the construction industry and a base material for many other industrial sectors. A particular challenge in the lime industry is reducing unavoidable, raw material–related emissions. In addition to electrifying the energy-intensive lime production process, CO₂ capture technologies are necessary to achieve climate-neutral lime production.

Paper Industry

A key industry of the modern circular economy

The paper industry uses the renewable raw material wood and reuses its fibers many times through the paper recycling process. In international comparison, the German paper industry ranks number one in Europe and fourth worldwide. However, the sector is among the five most energy-intensive industries in Germany.

Food Industry

One of the most important industrial sectors in Germany and in demand internationally.

The food industry is a key source of employment, prosperity, and stability in many regions of Germany. It plays a fundamental role in supplying the population with food, and Germany is the world’s third-largest food exporter. To remain competitive, the sector needs solutions for its energy-intensive production processes.

Glass Industry

One of the most energy-intensive industries in Germany.

Around 20% of the glass produced in Europe comes from German manufacturing. Glass is one of the most versatile materials, used in many areas of daily life and, as a building material, an important component of the energy transition. Transforming glass production to environmentally friendly technologies requires ensuring supply security and competitive costs for sourcing green primary energy.

Datacenter

The ongoing digitalization of all economic sectors requires future-proof IT infrastructures.

Data centers are the heart of the digital economy. In Germany, one of Europe’s leading technology hubs, their importance continues to grow. The future of data centers in Germany will largely depend on how successfully the balance between digital infrastructure and sustainable energy supply can be achieved. Innovative concepts for energy efficiency and supply will be crucial.

Logistics

Logistics companies together form one of the most important economic sectors in Germany.

Transport services make up the largest share of the German logistics market and account for around 20% of global CO₂ emissions. The logistics sector is undergoing major transformation, driven by digitalization, automation, and the push for greater sustainability. Alternatives to fossil fuels are a key focus for future-proof transport solutions.
